내부에서 격화된 이질감은 2003년 민주당 분열과 ‘열린우리당’ 창당으로 이어졌다. 노무현 정권이 실패한 뒤 ‘열린우리당’ 실험은 끝났고 다시 호남 중심 ‘민주당’으로 회귀하는 듯했다. 그러나 노무현 자살과 反(반)MB 여론이 커지자 左派(좌파)·親盧(친노) ·386세력은 통진당과 민통당에서 부활했다.
민통당을 장악한 운동권 출신 新(신)주류는 1980년대 운동과정에서 YS·DJ가 이끄는 보수야당 정치노선의 불철저함과 기회주의성을 비판하며 성장한 좌익세력이다. 따라서 이들은 민주당 舊(구)주류보다 통진당 류 從北(종북)·反(반)시장 노선에 훨씬 친화력이 있다.
이런 면에서 2012년 민통당 집권은 과거 김대중·노무현 집권과 차원을 달리 한다. 통진당은 물론 여기서 떨어져 나온 진보정의당과 역사적 인식을 같이해 온 從北(종북)연대세력의 집권. 대한민국의 역사적 정통성과 이념적 정체성을 철저히 부정한 80년대 NL적 인식의 제도권 장악을 뜻한다. 노무현 시절 마무리되지 못한 혁명의 완성이다.
