스티브 잡스의 성공은 자유사회의 승리

옛날에 '정보체계론'을 공부할 때 주워 들은 얘기 한 토막. 2차대전 말기, 미국과 영국 등이 포탄 탄도 계산 등 전쟁용도로 컴퓨터 개발에 박차를 가하고 있을 때 독일의 한 젊은이도 컴퓨터에 대한 아이디어를 떠올렸다. 그걸 들고 당국자를 찾아가 지원해 달라고 호소했지만, 돌아온 대답은 "지금 총통께서 필요로 하는 것은 몽상가가 아니라, 한 명의 소총병"이라는 것이었다고 한다. 전체주의 사회의 경직성이 천재의 가능성을 막아버린 것이다.
 
 인기 전자오락 게임 테트리스를 만든 소련의 젊은이가 자신의 아이디어에 대한 대가로 얼마나 받았는지는 아무도 기억하지 못한다. 소련이 무너진 후 시장경제가 도입되면서 조금 챙겼다는 얘기도 들은 것 같기는 한데, 얼마나 잘 살게 됐는지는 모르겠다.
 
 스티브 잡스가 세상을 떠났다. 세상에 버려졌던 사생아가 맨손으로 애플이라는 회사를 창업하고 PC시대를 열었다. 냉혹한 자본주의의 논리에 따라 자기가 만든 회사에서 쫒겨나는 아픔을 겪기도 했지만, 미국은 그에게 재기의 기회도 주었다. 결국 그는 한 시대의 '영웅'이 될 수 있었다. 스티브 잡스의 성공은 자유사회, 자유시장경제의 승리이기도 하다.
