Letter from Ms. Suzanne Scholte
Dear Friends:
사랑하는 지체들께,
It gives me great pleasure to send my greetings and support for the Three Days of Liberation of North Korea to Change the Course of Korean History. What you are doing over these next days is so critical in this fight for our brothers and sisters in North Korea.
여러분께 이렇게 안부인사를 드릴수 있게 되어 기쁘고, 한국의 역사를 바꾸기 위한 Three Days of Liberation of North Korea 에 대한 지원을 요청하는 글을 쓰게 되어 또한 기쁩니다. 앞으로 3일간 여러분께서 동참하셔서 함께 하실 Three days of Liberation of North Korea는, 북한의 형제 자매들을 위한 투쟁에 큰 영향을 줄 것입니다.
There are no people that are more suffering and more persecuted than those enslaved under the dictatorship of Kim Jong-il. We have fought this battle with action, with advocacy, with speeches, with appeals to our governments, with conferences and rallies, but one of the most important ways that we can help the people of North Korea is through constant and vigilant prayer.
여러분도 아시는 바, 김정일 독재아래서 이렇게 모진 핍박과 고난을 당하는 국민은 전세계 어디에도 흔치 않습니다. 이 부당함에 대하여서 우리는, 끊임없는 변호와 소송, 또 여러 강연들로 그들을 지키고 보호하려 하였으며, 수 많은 소규모와 대규모 집회들도 열었으며, 심지어는 정부에 탄원하는 것조차 주저하지 않았습니다. 하지만 그 중에서도 가장 중요한 사역은 기도, 부당한 대우를 받는 그 북한 동포들을 위해 쉬지않고 기도하고, 간절함으로 하나님께 부르짖는 것이었습니다.
As Christians, we know that this regime in North Korea represents the antithesis of all that we believe. We worship a God who loves, redeems and frees. We fight a dictatorship that hates, condemns, and enslaves.
그리스도인들로써 우리는, 북한의 정치사상과 자행되어지는 정책들이 우리가 믿는 모든 것을 거스른다는 것을 아실 것입니다. 우리가 섬기는 하나님은, 사랑하시고, 해방시키시고, 심지어 우리를 구원하시기 위해 당신의 아들에게 십자가를 지우시는 분이기 때문입니다. 그러므로 우리는, 미움을 낳고 정죄를 하며 노예와 포로를 일삼는, 그 독재를 대항해 싸우는 것이 당연합니다.
For too long the world has been silent in the face of massive starvation, millions of deaths, hundreds of thousands jailed in political prison camps that rival the Nazi death camps and the Soviet gulag, public executions, and there are thousands of refugees who have fled to China where they are sold and abused and hunted down and repatriated to be tortured and imprisoned and sometimes even executed when they are forced back to North Korea.
오랜 세월동안 세상은 아무 입을 열지 않았습니다. 엄청난 기근과 기하급수적인 굶주림과 죽음 속에서도, 또 예전의 나치나 구소련의 강제 수용소와 같은 정치범 수용소에 잡혀가고 공개처형을 당한 수백명, 아니 수천명의 소리없는 죽음 앞에, 세상은, 우리는, 아무 입을 열지 않았습니다. 아직도 이 일들은 이루어지고 있습니다. 아직도 같은 죽음들은 반복하고 있고, 그것을 피해 중국으로 넘어간 수많은 탈북자들은, 그곳에서 또 노예로 팔리고, 북한사람이라는 신분 하나 때문에 여자들은 소리없이 유린당하고, 대게는 다시 붙잡혀 북한으로 되돌려져 수감되고, 고문 당하고, 심지어는 바로 공개처형 당합니다.
And where is the church? I remember appealing to a church to run an announcement about an event for North Korean human rights and being turned down with the comment: we tend to stand silent on political matters.
이렇게 아무 대답 없는 세상 속에서, 교회는 어디 있습니까? 예전에 한 교회에 북한주민인권보호에 대한 공고를 부탁한 적이 있습니다. 그 교회는 이 대답과 함께 거절했습니다. “저희 교회는 정치적인 문제들에 대해서는 최대한 관여하지 않으려고 합니다”
When I heard those words it stung me greatly and I saw in my mind a Jewish family fleeing the Nazis knocking on the door of a church and the church responding: we tend to stand silent on political matters.
이 말을 들었을 때, 제 마음은 송곳으로 찌르듯이 고통스러웠습니다. 마치, 나찌 병사들의 총 칼을 피해 숨을 곳을 찾던 유대인 가족들이 교회 문을 두드렸을 때, 교회가 “저희 교회는 정치적인 문제들에 대해서는 최대한 관여하지 않으려고 합니다” 라고 말한 것과 같았습니다.
Yet, this cause for North Korean human rights needs more than anything the church and the prayers of believers for we are not fighting flesh and blood but the principalities that reign terror in North Korea.
분명한 건, 이 북한주민인권보호를 위해 필요한 것은, 다른 어떤것도 또 다른 누구도 아닌, 바로 교회와 성도들의 기도라는 것입니다. 그것은 바로, 우리의 싸움은 혈과 육에 대한 것이 아니라, 북한을 주관하고 있는 악의 영들에 대한 것이기 때문입니다.
The Bible is clear in both the Old and New Testament on what we are called to do about North Korea.
이 문제에 대하여 구약과 신약을 통틀어 성경은, 우리가 마땅히 해야할 바에 대해 분명하게 가르치고 있습니다.
Proverbs 24:11-12, calls us to “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.” It is easy to say “We knew nothing of this” but “Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?”
잠언 24:11-12 에서는 우리에게 “사망으로 끌려가는 자를 건져 주며 살륙을 당하게 된 자를 구원하지 아니하려고 하지 말라”고 이야기 합니다. 우리는 “나는 그것을 알지 못하였습니다” 라고 변명하기 쉽지만, “그가 각 사람의 행위대로 보응하시리라” 라고 성경은 이야기 합니다.
When we read Isaiah 58, it is chilling to think how much this describes North Korea: “Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”
이사야서 58장에는 더 분명하게 나와 있습니다.
“내가 기뻐하는 금식은 흉악의 결박을 풀어 주며 멍에의 줄을 끌러 주며 압제 당하는 자를 자유하게 하며 모든 멍에를 꺾는 것이 아니겠느냐 또 주린 자에게 네 양식을 나누어 주며 유리하는 빈민을 집에 들이며 헐벗은 자를 보면 입히며 또 네 골육을 피하여 스스로 숨지 아니하는 것이 아니겠느냐” (이사야서 58:6-7)
Psalm 94: 16-19 Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? “
“누가 나를 위하여 일어나서 행악자들을 치며 누가 나를 위하여 일어나서 악행하는 자들을 칠까” (시편 94:16)
Remember that there are no greater suffering people in the world today, they are the least of our brothers and sisters because they are living in enslavement, in darkness and fear and despair. And in Matthew 25: 40 Jesus explains that what ever you do for one of the least of these brothers of mine you did for me.
그들은 지금 이 세상에서 가장 소외받고 가장 연약한 사람들입니다, 부당하게 붙잡혀 노예로 전락하였고, 어두움과 두려움과 절망속에 하루하루를 살고 있습니다. 마태복음 25장에서처럼, 예수님은 “나의 형제중 가장 작은 자에게 한것이 곧 나에게 한것과 같다”고 말씀하셨습니다. 그 소자가 비록 믿는 성도를 가리킨다 할찌라도, 그 긍휼과 자비의 손길은 내 죽어가는 이웃에게도, 지금 내 눈앞에서 악행의 희생양이 되어가는 북한 동포들에게도 뻗혀져야 함이 마땅할 것입니다.
Now, at this time, it is the essential that the Church rise up and join this movement for North Korean Human Rights and take their proper place in leading the way for North Korea's freedom.
여러분, 지금이 그 때입니다. 하나님의 마음을 헤아려, 약한 자와 굶주린 자, 억압받는 자를 위해 우리의 마음을 돌이킬 때입니다. 교회마다 일어나 이 북한주민인권보호 운동에 참여하고, 앞장서서 북한의 해방을 위해 힘쓸 때입니다.
I believe in the power of prayer and I believe that what you are doing over these next three days will be heard in Heaven and just as the Berlin wall collapsed, your prayers will help tear down the walls that enslave our brothers and sisters in North Korea.
저는 기도의 능력을 믿습니다. 저는 여러분이 이 3일동안 참여할 사역이, 그 부르짖음이, 하늘에 열납될 것이라 믿습니다. 그리고 베를린 장벽을 무너뜨렸던 것처럼, 여러분의 기도가 북한의 형제 자매들을 압제하는 막힌 담을 허물어 버릴 것이라 믿습니다.
