마이크 펜스 미국 부통령이 우주 공간에서 이뤄지는 북한 등 적국들의 위협 행위를 비판했다. 북한과 러시아, 중국, 그리고 이란은 전자공격을 통해 미국의 위성 시스템을 위협하는 무기를 추구해왔다는 지적이다.
VOA 24일 보도에 따르면, 펜스 부통령은 23일 워싱턴에서 열린 국가우주회의 주최 토론회에 참석해 ‘미국의 우주군 설립 노력’을 주제로 연설하며, “우주는 지난 세대에 비해 근본적으로 변했다”며 “한때는 황량하고 경쟁이 없었지만 현재는 대립으로 가득 차고 있다”고 말했다(“But, today, space is fundamentally different than it was a generation ago. What was once desolate and uncontested is increasingly crowded and confrontational. Today, other nations are seeking to disrupt our space-based system and undermine our economic and military mic as never before.”)
그는 이어 “북한을 비롯해 러시아, 중국, 이란과 같은 나라들이 지상에서 전자공격을 통해 미국의 항행·통신 위성을 방해하고 시야를 가리며 무력화하기 위한 무기를 수년 간 추구해왔다”고 지적했다(“For many years, nations from Russia, China to North Korea and Iran have perused weapons to jam, blind and disable our navigation and communication satellites through electronic attacks from the ground.”)
또 최근 적국들은 새로운 전쟁 무기를 우주에 도입하기 위해 애쓰고 있다며, 위성 요격 무기부터 공중발사 레이저, 그리고 매우 위협적인 궤도상 활동과 침략적인 극초음속 미사일까지 다양하다고 말했다(“But, recently, our adversaries have been working to bring new weapons of war into space itself, from anti-satellite weapons and airborne lasers, highly-threatening on-orbit activities, and invasive hypersonic missiles…”)
앞서 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 지난 6월 국방부에 우주군 창설을 지시했으며, 이어 지난 8월 우주 방어 시스템 예산을 갱신하는 내용이 포함된 7170억 달러 규모의 2019회계연도 국방수권법에 서명한 바 있다.
