술 권하는 사회, 술 취한 사람들
방탕한 로마의 멸망이 멀고 먼 아라사 옛 추억만은 아니다.

언제부터 우리 사회는 술 권하는 사회가 된 것일까? 어느 곳에나 술! 술! 술! 이다. 대학한번 가보겠다고 공부하면서 200원 300원짜리 불량식품 사먹던 고등학생들은 대학에 오자마자 술잔을 집어 든다. 불량식품 먹으며 친구랑 잘 지내던 사람들이 3개월 사이에 완전히 정신구조가 개조가 된 걸까?

 

술을 먹지 않으면 인간관계를 맺을 수 없다며 서로에게 술을 권하기 시작한다. 20대도 대학도 처음인 우리는 그 것이 진리이겠거니, 친해질 때까지 술을 마신다. 마시고 또 마시고 토해도 마시고 건강에 이상이 생겨도 마시고 술을 마신 횟수와 인생의 성공이 비례한다며 대학생들을 유혹한다.

 

모두들 ‘성인은 술을 마셔야 인간관계가 만들어진다’, ‘술을 마셔야 취직을 잘한다’ 등등의 말을 너무나 당연할 진리로 받아들이고 행한다. 그런데 함께 만나면 아직도 100원짜리 불량식품 ‘누네띠네’와의 추억을 이야기하는 친구들이 대학에 가면서 술을 좋아하는 어떤 이로 바뀌었을 리는 만무하다. 그렇다면 우리는 어쩔 수 없이 받아들인 것은 아닐까? 난 이들이 술 권하는 사회에 세뇌 당했다고 확신한다. 이제 우리는 이런 술 권하는 사회를 바꿔야 한다.

 

20대가 권해야 할 것은 술잔이 아니다. 한 권의 ‘책’이며, 미래를 위해 서로 격려하는 ‘말’ 이다. 예전에는 선배가 후배에게 플라톤의 책을 권하고, 윤동주의 시를 권하고, 미래에 대한 진지하고 이성적인 말을 권했다고 하는데. 우리는 감각에 충실하여 오늘도 술을 권한다. 내 경험으로는 조금도 위와 같은 행동을 이해할 수가 없다. 오로지 조금 더 취하자. 조금 더 고삐를 풀어보자 권하는 대학이 있을 뿐이다.

 

사전에서는 대학을 ‘국가와 인류 사회 발전에 필요한 학술 이론과 응용 방법을 교수하고 연구하며, 지도적 인격을 도야한다.’고 정의한다. 이 사전적 정의에 포함 된 것이 술 인가? 지성인가?. 감각에만 충실하여 이성과 지성을 멀리하는 대학 사회.

 

술 권하는 사회에서 술 잘하는 개인은 성공할지도 모른다. 그러나 존속하는 국가 앞에 술만 권해 본 그들이 지도적 인격을 갖춘 사람으로 성공할 것인가에 대해서는 의문이다.
