‘이명박 포퓰리즘’ 논란
좌로 기울었다 하는 포퓰리즘은 논란의 대상이 돼야 할 것이다.
조전혁 의원실과 자유기업원 등이 주관한 “이명박 정부의 포퓰리즘 비판‘ 세미나에서 필자가 발언한 것을 중앙일보가 보도했다(5/31). 이왕 보도됐으니 기사에 언급된 부분의 진의(眞意)를 보완하려 한다. 이명박 대통령이 대기업 때리기를 하는 것에 관한 대목과 관련해서.

 

 대기업 아니라 그보다 더한 것이라 해도 법률적으로 걸릴 짓, 도덕적으로 걸릴 짓을 하면 당연히 얻어맞아야 한다. 문제는 MB의 ‘왔다 갔다’ 행보다. 필자는, 비즈니스 프렌들리를 고창하다가 재보선에서 패배하자 즉각 ‘친서민’ ‘초과이익 공유제’로 표변하는 그 정치적 지그재그(zigzag) 행태를 지적한 것이다.

 

 대기업 오너란 사람이 법과 도의를 무겁게 알지 않는 행위를 하거나, 대기업이 불미스러운 소행을 저질렀을 경우, 그건 법이 알아서 처벌하면 된다. 다만 대기업 자체를 ‘나쁜 X'으로 보는 우리 사회 일각의 풍조만은 그와는 또 다른 문제다.

 

 이명박 정부로서는 그 나름대로 할 말이 있을 것이다. 그 누구나 할 수 있는, 대기업의 오래 된 구조적 문제점을 지적하는 것을 시비한 것이 아니다. 다만, 일관성 없이 정책이 우로 기울었다, 좌로 기울었다 하는 포퓰리즘은 논란의 대상이 돼야 할 것이다.
