제대로 한번 얘기해봅시다.

but there is only one guaranteed way you can have peace and you can have it in the next second, surrender.

뿐만 아니라 평화를 순식간에 얻을 수 있는 확실하게 보장된 방법도 있긴 있습니다. 항복입니다

Admittedly there is a risk in any course we follow other than this,

의심할 나위없이 이외의 다른 방법은 그 어떤 것이든 위험이 따릅니다.

but every lesson in history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement

그러나 역사의 모든 교훈들은

유화정책(햇볕정책)에 더 큰 위험이 도사리고 있다는 것을 말해줍니다.

and this is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face that their policy of accommodation is appeasement,

그런데 무서운 게 있습니다.

의도는 좋은 리버럴들은 그들의 융통성 있는 정책이

(그런 위험한) 유화정책(일 뿐)임을 외면한다는 것입니다.

and it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender.

"평화냐 전쟁이냐" 사이의 선택은 없습니다.

오직 "싸우느냐 항복이냐"의 선택이 있을 뿐입니다.

If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, then eventually we have to face the final demand, the ultimatum.

만약 우리가 계속해서 수용하고, 물러서고, 후퇴하다 보면,

결국 마지막 요구에 직면할 수밖에 없습니다. 최후통첩입니다.

And what then?

그리고 그 다음엔 무엇이겠습니까?

When Nikita Khrushchev has told his people he knows what our answer will be,

니키타 흐루시초프는 자국민들에게

우리(미국)의 답이 무엇일지 알고 있다고 말했습니다.

He has told them that we are retreating under the pressure of the Cold War,

그는 우리가(미국이) 냉전의 압박을 못이겨 뒤걸음질치고 있으며,

and someday when the time comes to deliver the final ultimatum,

언젠가 최후통첩을 전달할 때

our surrender will be voluntary because by that time we will have weakened from within spiritually, morally, and economically.

우리(미국)의 항복은 자발적으로 이뤄질 것이라고 했습니다.

왜냐면 바로 그때가 되면 우리는(미국은) 이미 안에서부터

정신적, 도덕적, 경제적으로 무너져 있을 것이기 때문이라는 것입니다.

He believes this because from our side he has heard voices pleading for peace at any price or better Red than dead,

그는 이를 믿고 있습니다.

우리 중 일부가 어떤 대가를 치러서라도 평화를 구걸하자거나,

죽는 것보단 빨갱이가 되는 게 낫다고 하는 소리를 들었기 때문입니다.

or as one commentator put it, he would rather live on his knees than die on his feet.

혹은 어느 방송인의 말을 빌자면,

서서 죽느니 무릎 꿇고 살겠다고 한 것을 그의 귀로 들었기 때문입니다.

And therein lies the road to war, because those voices don't speak for the rest of us.

그런데 바로 거기에 전쟁으로 향하는 길이 놓여 있습니다.

왜냐면 그 소리들은

우리들 가운데 나머지 다른 사람들을 위한 것은 아니기 때문입니다.

You and I know and do not believe that life is so dear and peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery.

당신과 나는 알고 있지만 믿지 않습니다.

삶이 그렇게 귀하고 평화가 그렇게 달콤한 것임을 알지만

쇠사슬과 노예살이를 대가로 얻어져야 할 정도라고 믿지는 않습니다.

If nothing in life is worth dying for, when did this begin, just in the face of this enemy?

만약 인생에서 목숨을 바칠만한 게 아무것도 없다면,

적과 마주한 상황에서는 어떻게 해야 합니까?

Or should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in slavery under the pharaoh?

혹은 모세는 이스라엘의 자손들에게

계속 파라오의 노예살이로 살아가라고 말했어야 합니까?

Should Christ have refused the cross?

예수는 십자가를 거부했어야 합니까?

Should the patriots at Concord Bridge have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the shot heard around the world?

콩코드 다리에서 우리의 애국자들은 총을 내려놓고

세계를 울린 발포를 거부했어야 합니까?

The martyrs of history were not fools,

역사의 순교자들은 바보가 아니었습니다.

and our honored dead who gave their lives to stop the advance of the Nazis didn't die in vain.

그리고 나치의 진군을 막아내기 위해 목숨을 바친 우리의 명예로운 전사자들은

헛된 죽음을 한 게 아닙니다.

Where, then, is the road to peace? Well, it's a simple answer after all.

평화를 향한 길은 그렇다면 어디에 있을까요? 그 답은 매우 간단합니다.

You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, there is a price we will not pay.

당신과 내가 우리의 적에게

"용납하지 않는 대가가 있다."고 말할 용기가 있어야 합니다.

There is a point beyond which they must not advance.

그들이 넘어서는 안 되는 지점이 있다, 이렇게 말입니다.

Winston Churchill said that the destiny of man is not measured by material computation.

or we will sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.

그렇지 않으면 우리는 후손들에게

수천 년의 암흑 속으로 마지막 걸음을 옮기게 하는 형을 선고하는 게 될 것입니다.
